Make the Minutes Count: Time Management 101

Does anyone else feel like there just aren’t enough hours in a day to accomplish everything? Well, think again. If your to-do list for the day is exceeding your mental and physical capacity to get it all done, then you’re not working smarter; you’re only working harder.

 

Just because your life is quote on quote busy, it does not always mean that you’re working harder than the other person or well… that you’ll be more successful in life. Life is too short to be a robot and get everything done in a meticulous manner. I spent most of last year doing that and it’s safe to say that I was almost always stressed. This meant poor eating habits, lack of sleep and the guilt of not doing enough when in reality I was juggling ten things at once. Was it efficient? No. Did I achieve anything? Possibly. Was I satisfied? Not really.

This year, my focus is to minimize my daily workload by taking the time to prioritize, eliminate and organize tasks from most to least important. My goal is not to be hyper-productive and achieve everything in one day but to simplify how I work by operating in a fast, efficient manner with minimal amount of stress involved. Easier said than done, am I right?

 

PRODUCTIVITY IS KEY. HYPER-PRODUCTIVITY IS NOT.

I read several articles on how to manage my time effectively (I’m the type of person that finds his life’s answers on Google). Google came up with close to ninety-six million results on time management and as I went through the first page of the search results, I found nothing but cliché textbook results on tips I’ve heard again and again. Nothing new. Nothing special. So I decided to compile my top five life hacks on how to manage your time not just effectively, but also efficiently!

1. GET A PLANNER. NOT JUST ANY PLANNER, BUT ONE THAT WORKS BEST FOR YOU!
I know that our generation relies heavily on technology and when Siri can just create a calendar event for you, why write it down? Well, what happens when your iPhone runs out of battery or worst-case scenario it crashes? Luckily you’ll have it written down in your handy-dandy planner. I recently invested in a planner from Shinola and it’s been my best-friend ever since. 

2. ISOLATE YOURSELF.
This is definitely one of the hardest tasks to do. If this means locking yourself in a room and leaving your phone in another room so you don’t get distracted, then so be it. I’m the king of procrastination and my phone is by far the most distracting tool in my household, and then comes the kitchen (I’m a stress-snacker).  To avoid getting distracted by notifications on my phone, I hide my phone in a drawer in my closet. 

3. LEARN TO SAY NO.
I’m sure you’ve heard the saying “Jack of all trades, Master of none”.  There is nothing wrong with committing to one too many things, it only teaches us to manage our time more effectively but sometimes… sometimes you just have to decline or re-schedule an appointment if it’s not working. Trust me, there is nothing worse than over-committing to something and looking like a fool at the end of the day.

 

 

4. ALLOCATE YOUR TIME EFFECTIVELY.

If you’re like me juggling full-time school, an online magazine and your personal brand all at once, then you have tasks from all three mediums to accomplish in a day. The best way to ensure that you stay focused on a singular task is to allocate time for individual tasks rather than trying to do everything at once. To solve this problem, I create a work “time-table” and set an approximate amount of time I would need to accomplish each task. This way if I force myself to get out my best work in the time-slot allocated and work efficiently.

5. EAT. SLEEP. EAT. REPEAT

In order for you to be productive, your mind and body needs to be well rested. Let's not forget well-feeded. Those who lack sleep are more likely to be less productive and I speak from experience. At the end of the day, your mind needs a break and so do you. One of the key things I have learned to do this month is allocate at least an hour or two a day to do something that I love (not school or work related). This usually involves me binge-watching TV shows on Netflix.
